Gateway To Magic
The descent to the underworld is an archetypal and mythological concept that spans across various cultures and legends. It represents a transformative journey into the realm of the dead, often symbolizing the human quest for self-discovery, renewal, and the exploration of the shadow aspects of existence.
One notable example is the epic of Ishtar in the realm of Ereshkigal. The Mesopotamian goddess of love and fertility, descends to the underworld to confront the ruler of the great below and the queen of the dead. This myth portrays the challenging and perilous nature of the underworld journey, where Ishtar must navigate the seven gates and face the stripping away of her divine attributes. Ultimately, she is reborn and returns to the realm of the living, embodying newfound wisdom and power.
Similarly, in the myth of the lost daughter of Demeter, Kore (Persephone) in the realm of Pluto, the goddess of Elysium is abducted by the brother of Zef (Zeus), the ruler of the underworld. Persephone's descent into the realm of darkness represents the cycle of life and death, as well as the changing seasons. Her time spent in the underworld symbolizes introspection, transformation, and the journey towards spiritual maturity. As she returns to the surface world for part of the year, life blossoms, and when she descends once again, winter ensues.

With Gateway to Magic, I chose another black & white palette to create a piece that draws viewers into a world of mysticism and exploration. The lack of color emphasizes the details and contrast, highlighting the surreal elements of the journey into the unknown.
This artwork invites you to step through a portal where magic awaits just beyond the threshold. Securing 3rd place in the international High Art 2020 competition was an incredible honor, and it allowed me to showcase my passion for blending intricate line work with storytelling rooted in fantasy and myth.
